Sacramento Radio Expo is the culmination of a life-long love affair with vintage radios. The owner, Doug Wilner, grew up during the transition of tube radios to transistor radios in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He began reading all the literature available on these radios and became a ham radio operator in early 1965 (WA9PVA – and then became WB6LOO after moving to California in 1975- and is an active ham operator to this day).
After going to the University of Illinois for 9 years (received his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering) he became a Faculty Staff member of the University of Illinois in both the Electrical Engineering Department and the Nuclear Engineering Department. Doug then joined NASA and spent 15 years in the agency as a Project Engineer and as a Program Manager.
SRE began as a home-based business in the early 1980’s as a means for selling vintage and radios that Doug had restored. Doug has restored thousands of radios over the past 30 years and has over 1000 restored radios in his warehouse. Doug has spent the past several years training skilled technicians in this field and is always trying to educate younger electronics professionals in preserving the heritage of vintage electronics. “Made in USA” meant quality and innovation when America was preeminent in the field of electronics.
